Luca Chiantore

Tone Moves: A History of Piano Technique
Barcelona: Musikeon Books, 2019

Is there such a thing as the ideal technique? The past and present of musical performance constantly provide evidence that, among the multiple different ways available of using our body, plenty might prove equally efficient and musically convincing. Among all the possible options, however, one merits special attention: the technique employed by composers themselves while creating their works.

In this book, Italian-born pianist and scholar LUCA CHIANTORE sets out to examine the transformations undergone by piano technique, and how this overall history relates to the performative customs of those pianist-composers whose works we today consider the core repertoire of so-called Western classical music. The author illustrates the diversity of their bodily approaches to the keyboard, exploring their respective biomechanical inquiries amidst increasing hand and arm involvement in piano playing and the emergence of often contrasting pedagogical theories.

The result of intense, rigorous research, Tone Moves contains an impressive amount of documentation, including a vast number of theoretical works which had never before been studied thoroughly. Through all this, the author narrates a “history” that uncovers crucial parallels with the past three century's aesthetic revolutions. Chiantore spins a tale of widespread, lasting changes, a searching narrative brimming with strong personalities often steering in opposite directions, all in all an avowal of the stunning diversity of options available when expressing ourselves through an instrument

MUSICIANS AND REAL LIFE

Besides artistic or scholarly achievements, today’s music graduates have to perform many supplemental tasks that go into the making of a sustainable career in a highly competitive musical world. The scarcity of traditional music jobs, an ever-increasing professional musician population, and a continuously evolving music industry, have made the sustainability of a music career problematic. After graduation, many musicians are ill prepared for what lies ahead because they receive little to no education with regard to their careers. Institutions need to be aware of these problems and have realistic policies and well-designed course curricula to better prepare their students for real-life challenges.
In order to improve music education programs in any music school, educators and directors need to understand the acts of entrepreneurship. Music students and staff need to be like-minded in order to understand and create an entrepreneurial act. They need to continue discovering that which is innovative and turn it into real goals.
Entrepreneurial mindset, education and holistic approach will be discussed in an open forum with the participants.

I, You, We: Exploring Interactive Multi-Media Performance
I, You, We is I vs. You: We is an interactive multi-media performance which is created to overlay our mirror image with that of others, thereby blurring the concept of “me vs. you” into a collective “we.”
This work explores how blurring one’s vision of self might allow for the transformation of singular self-identity into collective being. Breaking down the normative concept of spectatorship, audience, and sound engagement, this multi-media performance invites audiences’ participation.  This lecture recital will explore a conceptual framework and inspiration behind this work and further demonstrate how the audio-visual installation can merge with a semi-improvisational performance on the violin. Overall, this presentation and performance will highlight three major aspects of interactions; 1) real-time audience interactions with the installation; 2) interactions between acoustics classical music and electronic sounds; 3) real-time interactions between visual and sound

Lecture: The impact of great cultural and musical events

Testing Linguistically Violin Potentials. An Introdution to "Praise for a Shadow" by Goffredo Petrassi

Abstract. In Elogio per un’ombra [Praise to a shadow] by Goffredo Petrassi (1904- 2003), the shadow reminds the listener of a mnemonic function of writing, it aims at testing linguistically all the instrumental possibilities, while impeccably reaching that domain where virtuosity and music are akin. The history of the violin revives here with all its stylistic patterns and this time it is crystallized in its highly virtuoso use of the most varied formulas, from Corelli to Paganini. The interval function, while meant as both a composition principle and a simple physical awesomeness, is the basic element from which musical events derive. Throughout the four big sections of the piece, the time of writing – which is perceived as discontinuous, broken, discrete – creates a sort of ‘dialectics of loss’ when pure sensations alternate without link to one another and without any emotional involvement. Petrassi’s humanism reveals itself in the regained linearity and in the clarity of writing, without ever being challenged by those “sonorous ghosts”, nor by those memories/relics which come back to surface through rarefied and/or particularly characterized sonorities (on the bridge, on the keyboard, flautato, with the wood of the bow, harmonics).

"Valse: Noble et Sentimentale"

Mini récital, piano 4 hands,  with a brief introduction of the pieces
Irini Gavrilidou & Marilena Liakopoulou

The waltz, this powerful and joyful danse has inspired many composers and has dominated the lifestyle of a whole era. The hopes of peoples of the late 19th century for a new Europe and a new humanitarian world, healthier, wealthier and more anthropocentric, are all mirrored in this small form of danse, sparkling with joy and whirls, but, alas, soon to be abandoned before the face of war, destruction and famine. The collection of 16 Waltzes op. 39 of Brahms presented here by pianists Irini Gavrilidou and Marilena Liakopoulou in its original piano-4 hands form, is a tribute to Vienna and its lively social and musical life. As times are changing the birth, the rise, the decay and the decline not only of the waltz as a dance but also of the society and lifestyle of the pre-World-Wars Europe is captured in Ravel's masterpiece La Valse, here presented in its piano-4-hands version. Fin-de-siècle-Europe is dying, only to be reborn again, but after that, nothing will be the same again.
