Αποφοίτησε από το Νέο Ωδείο Θεσσαλονίκης με Πτυχίο Αρμονίας (τάξη Γ. Μάντακα & Χ. Σαμαρά) και Α΄ Βραβείο στο Πιάνο (τάξη Α. Τσίτσας-Κούνιο), έχοντας γίνει δεκτός στο μεταπτυχιακό τμήμα της Royal Academy of Music (RAM) του Λονδίνου με υποτροφία (Entrance Exhibition). Εκεί σπούδασε επίσης τσέμπαλο και διεύθυνση ορχήστρας, και ολοκλήρωσε με το Master in Piano Performance στο King’s College του Λονδίνου (κοινό πρόγραμμα με την RAM) ως υπότροφος του Ιδρύματος “Λίλιαν Βουδούρη”, του Schillizzi Foundation και του British Council. Έχει εμφανιστεί ως σολίστ και μέλος συνόλων μουσικής δωματίου σε φεστιβάλ στην Ευρώπη (Ιταλία, Εσθονία, Αγγλία) και τις ΗΠΑ, και έχει παρουσιαστεί σε ραδιοφωνικές και τηλεοπτικές εκπομπές (BBC World Service, Γ΄ Πρόγραμμα, ΕΤ3, TV100).
 
Το 1996 ξεκίνησε διδακτορικές σπουδές μουσικολογίας με υποτροφία (Graduate Recruitment Award) στο University of Washington (Σηάτλ, ΗΠΑ), όπου δίδαξε επί 6 χρόνια, προτάθηκε για το Αριστείο Διδασκαλίας και βραβεύτηκε για την καλύτερη μουσικολογική εργασία (“Adelyn Peck Leverett” Prize, 2003). Αποφοίτησε με PhD το 2003, αφού η American Brahms Society βράβευσε ομόφωνα τη διδακτορική διατριβή του (“Karl Geiringer” Scholarship). Ειδικεύεται στην ζωή και το έργο του Johannes Brahms, στον Γερμανικό Ρομαντισμό και στην Αισθητική της Μουσικής.  Τα τελευταία 25 χρόνια έχει παρουσιάσει εργασίες σε διεθνή μουσικολογικά συνέδρια στην Ευρώπη και τις ΗΠΑ, ενώ η έρευνά του έχει δημοσιευτεί σε ακαδημαϊκά περιοδικά και βιβλία.
 
Διετέλεσε Καλλιτεχνικός Διευθυντής του Δημοτικού Ωδείου Καβάλας (2008-19) και του Διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ «Γιάννη Α. Παπαϊωάννου» (2009-14 & 2018). Τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2019 ανέλαβε την διεύθυνση του Νέου Ωδείου Θεσσαλονίκης, ενώ τον Ιούνιο του 2020 του ανατέθηκε η διεύθυνση του Κρατικού Ωδείου Θεσσαλονίκης,  όπου συνεχίζει να υπηρετεί.


Musicologist-pianist George-Julius Papadopoulos graduated from the New Conservatory of Thessaloniki with a Piano Diploma (1st Prize) and a Harmony Degree. Concurrently, he studied at the Department of Music Studies, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
 
In 1992 he was given a prestigious “Entrance Exhibition” to pursue postgraduate piano studies at London’s Royal Academy of Music (RAM), as the youngest student accepted on the Advanced Course. While there, he also studied harpsichord and orchestral conducting. He graduated in piano and pedagogy, supported by further scholarships from the RAM, the Schillizzi Foundation and the Lilian Voudouris Foundation. A British Council Fellowship enabled him to complete an MMus in Piano Performance at King’s College (London), jointly with the RAM.
 
In 1996 he commenced doctoral studies in historical musicology on a “Graduate Recruitment Award” by the University of Washington School of Music (SOM) in Seattle, where he taught and conducted research for six years. He was nominated by SOM’s faculty for the “Excellence in Teaching” Award and in 2003 won SOM’s “Adelyn Peck-Leverett” Prize for the best student paper of the year. His Ph.D. dissertation was unanimously awarded the 2003 “Karl Geiringer” Prize of the American Brahms Society. During his stay in the US he also taught at the Seattle Conservatory.
 
A specialist in the life and work of Johannes Brahms, Dr. Papadopoulos has presented various papers at major international conferences in Europe and the US. His research is featured in books and articles published in academic journals. In addition to his specialty in Brahms, other interests include German Romanticism, the Aesthetics of Music and the Philosophy of Art, and the Evolution of the Piano Concerto.
 
He has appeared in solo and chamber music recitals in Europe (Italy, Estonia, England, Turkey) and the US, and has performed for Greek TV & Radio as well as for BBC World Service. In addition, he has presented lectures at various Greek cultural venues (e.g., opera and concert halls, museums etc.) and Greek conservatories, and recently he was invited to present the keynote lecture at a symposium in Barcelona’s Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya, along with a piano masterclass.
 
Dr. Papadopoulos has been the Artistic Director of the Kavala Municipal Conservatory (2008-2019) and the annual “Yannis A. Papaioannou” International Music Festival (2009-2014, 2018). He has also served as Head of Piano at the New Conservatory of Thessaloniki (2005-2016), worked at other music institutions in the city (including the State Conservatory) and taught at the Summer Music Academies of the Municipal Conservatories (Volos 2012 & 2013, Kavala 2014). In September 2019 he became Artistic Director of the New Conservatory of Thessaloniki – a position he held until June 2020, when the Minister of Culture appointed him Director of the Thessaloniki State Conservatory (Greece’s single state conservatory).
