The ambiguities and difficulties embedded in the definitions of Artistic Research (AR) and the multiplicity of research projects, all very different from each other, but all claiming to be good examples of AR, has generated huge turmoil in this area and, consequently, has been paving the way to an epistemological blind alley. One clear symptom of this is methodolatry : since AR remains resistant to the attempts to define it, there is a general tendency to resort to methodologies in the search for validation, support, security and credibility. The amount of books on AR methods that have been published in recent years is remarkable. In sum, we live in a situation where we have strong and robust means to achieve weak and vague purposes.
 
In order to reverse this trend, the Artistic Research School (ARS) was created. Basically, ARS is a peripatetic module developed in the University of Aveiro that aims to support the conception, development and dissemination of artistic research projects. Based on this perspective, the artistic research school aims to be an alternative to the current paradigm of knowledge production, regarding arts, in arts-based-courses at higher education institutions. Its purpose is to foster a perspective of artistic research as a trans-disciplinary field dedicated to artists interested in triangulating different modes of knowledge to realize the full potential of their artistic practices: to reconfigure old-established mythopoetic narratives through empathetic communication.

Target audience
 
The module was designed for:

1. artists who are interested in developing postgraduate research based on the creation of new artistic ‘products’ that allow them to sustain their practice whilst developing new knowledge in music;
2. artists interested in rethinking/developing old concepts or creating new ones for their artistic projects;

teachers of performance/responsible for supervising academic projects that feature artistic production
 
Structure
 
Structure: Depending on the evolution of the pandemic situation the course may run in both modalities: presencial or online.
If presencial, the schedule will be 3 consecutive days each consisting of a 3h lecture session followed by 2h of collective discussions moderated by the teachers.
If online, the sessions will not be on consecutive days (e.g. Monday, Wednesday and Friday)
Each day presents a different topic, following a progressive sequence.
​Interaction is based on expository sessions and collective discussions mediated by the chairs. All bibliography and resources used (e.g. powerpoint presentations) are available to participants on a digital platform

• The intersections between artistic research and career development
• Existing strategies for the dissemination of artistic research projects in and outside academic environments
• Artistic research and funding possibilities
